Sometimes it’s the lesser-known or “second” prospect in a deal who ends up being the most exciting. That’s taking nothing away from Seth Johnson, who's likely to impact the Phillies' big league staff in 2025, the bigger name who came to the Phillies in last year’s Gregory Soto deal with the Orioles. But Chace, signed back in 2019 for $225,000 out of Venezuela, made a huge impression with his new organization in six post-trade starts thanks to his electric stuff that missed a ton of bats while throwing more strikes, allowing him to touch Double-A for the first time.

With a strong and compact 6-foot-1 frame, Chace reminds some of a young Cristian Javier with the makings of an elite-level repertoire. It starts with an invisible fastball that comes from a low release and a ton of ride up in the zone. It averaged 94.5 mph in 2024 and was up to 98 mph, missing a ton of bats along the way (41 percent miss rate last year). He backs it up with three secondary offerings in his sweeper, a hard cutter and a changeup the Phillies think could be above-average eventually.

Chace had worked in more of a piggyback system with the Orioles, so he doesn’t have a ton of innings under his belt. There’s work to be done on his command; he’s walked 5.7 per nine heading into 2025, but his strike-throwing took a big step forward in 2024 (4.5 BB/9) and the Phillies think he has the chance to be a full-time starter in the big leagues in the future.

Chace signed with the Orioles in July 2019 for $225,000 out of Venezuela and like all the members of that international signing class, he had to wait until 2021 to make his professional debut. He skipped over the Dominican Summer League to start in the Florida Complex League, with mixed results. He missed a lot of bats and walked a lot of hitters with a move to full-season Delmarva in 2022. He made some progress with High-A Aberdeen in 2024 when he was sent with Seth Johnson to the Phillies in the Gregory Soto deal.

A strong, compact and athletic right-hander, Chace has an intriguing three-pitch mix. He leads with a fastball that sits in the low 90s, but plays up because of the ride up in the zone and low approach angle. Both his sweeper and his changeup have the chance to be very effective secondary offerings that can miss bats consistently.

All of these ingredients point to Chace having the chance to start, though the main obstacle to that has been his inability to find the strike zone. If he can refine his command, he could land in the back of a rotation; if not, he still could have value in a big league bullpen.
